hmm...you want to play Navy vs. Navy? someone out there made up a set of campaign rules on how to play Pirates very similar to what you're suggesting...our Yahoo group has the rules posted on it...if you'd like to join the group and have a yahoo account you can message me your email address or yahoo name and I should be able to add you to the group...or I could just email you the document if you don't want to join the group...which might be better... ...not entirely as you are suggesting, ship names, crew, unique treasures are still part of it, but not as necessary...the campaign was designed more of a competition...I think you're going more for a simulation...still, you might want to read the rules we have. the rules can always be simplified to not include UTs, crew, equipment...of course that cuts into the amount of strategy there can be, but whatever... ...didn't Wk attempt something like this with HeroClix? That Batman stuff that released near Wk's run there was, I believe, and attempt to simplify...hmm...might want to look into that. Is that the same one as here: comics-n-games.com/backlot/index.php?board=12.0They're good. Not really much fun if a player decides to make it a deathmatch. Otherwise quite good though.

Sounds like it...we've been making our own tweaks to it as well to balance the classes...and of course writing new missions...most of which I wrote...
Its hard to tell from the rules, but the limits dependent on class are only the starting fleet size. The fleets get bigger depending on mission you complete and gold you collect...if you've completed enough missions you could in theory have a 300pt fleet...right now in our campaign, after 8 game sessions, the largest fleet is, I belive, 215pts...mine is 170...no one is less than 140 right now if I'm remembering correctly. anyway, it is fun, but its about gold...the gold is what will win the game in the end...getting is how it seperates the classes...
in order by importance of gold getting... Pirates: find gold, capture ships, sinks ships Military: sinks ships, colonize/explore islands, capture ships Privateer: Sinks ships, captures ships, explore islands
Cursed are technically Pirate, but we've tweaked them to be: Cursed: Sink ships, explore, capture...
since no one would want to buy back ships captured by the Cursed the capture part was made last, explore is middle because sinking ships makes the most of them...Davy Jones wants those ships sent to his locker...
I don't think it was intended as a deathmatch...it is possible to do depending on the mission selected...there's a Mercenary mission I wrote that basically says 'go out and sink ships that are not of the same class as you; you receive double bounty.' its evil, its fun, it encourages you to sink ships...
we've also done away with the limits, basically because very few people would play Privateer class because of the limit and the fact that they had to pay for more stuff than Military. Similar with Pirate...only reason anyone played Pirate class was because they made more gold from exploring islands than the other classes...the limits were only driving people away from certain factions and not encouraging them to play as Privateer or Pirate...so we just made it 100 across the boards and on the first day as it is in the rules already, you get ayour main character free plus 25 gold to build your starting fleet...once you earned enough gold you could build up to 100pt fleet (you would then get at least 5 more points added onto that 100 depending on if you completed missions...you also get 5pts for every 100 gold you bring in depening on class of course...Privateers get it from being hired as Mercenaries, Pirates get fom exploring, Military gets it form sinking ships for the most part).
I've talked too much...anyway, it is a bit complicated, but its fun...if anyone has time to play like this I would highly encourage it...more strategic than usual and since the gameboard is suppose to stay the same over the course of the entire campaign, you end up controlling certain amounts of the board by building forts, colonies, pirate havens...so, it has an interesting element that regular games of Pirates does not.

Yeah, it's NOT meant as a deathmatch unless that's your faction's ability.
Losing your fleet in the first round really sucks....

I might have polluted this thread or even this forum. That's not my intention. I came here to see if there's anything interested to me, if so I'd like to participate, if not, it's not my intention to add to your problems and distract your mission.
Anyway I saw some interesting response, I will open new thread to see if anyone wants to follow-up, strictly for my benefits, not yours.
