I have this wonderful age of sail game, its called Privateers Bounty: Age of sail 2. While not quite graphicaly good as Empire: Total war or East India Company, its sailing is extremely realistic, and ships don't frustratingly sink for no reason. The campaigns can become quite bugged, and you might not know what to do, as they never fully patched the game. However, the extraordinary feature is hundreds of historical battles, ranging from single ship-to-ship engagements to Trafalgar and the Battle of the Nile. There is over 1200 very well-rendered ships, all researched down to the last carronade weight. It also has a full-fledged scenario editor, where you can model your own ships, battles, flags and campaigns. I know my local Target had 4 or 5 of them at $12, I believe. You can buy them at the Amazon link below. Also, to run the game, you'll will proabably have to switch what internet year you have to run it. This doesn't change any of your settings. Follow the instructions by the reviewer "Dr. Jonathan C. Powles" to get it working. Not sure if this works with Vista. You'll also need to download the patch for the game, to fix some bugs and decrease the huge amount of sail damage and increase hull damage. www.amazon.com/AGE-SAIL-II-PRIVATEERS-BOUNTY/dp/B00085361C

Yeah, I knew that you were, if it's as cheap as you say it couldn't hurt to pick it up.
Empire Total War is fun, but for me it's a visual feast and I just like finally having a game in which I can use ships. It has good gameplay though, don't get me wrong.
I've played Age of Empires, I don't mind RTS games but I'm not too good at that sort of stuff. The ships are fun though!

Bought it for Christmas, and sadly it won't run on my ancient computer. Perhaps too ancient? Either way somehow it works on my friend's computer.

cannonfury: Well, its the closest you can get to having Age of sail battles. If you don't find it entertaining, it serves as a great book on different engagements and ships. That cheap, as Vlad says, couldn't hurt that much. With Empire total war, you might want to research it (its still getting patched, they are having a major Naval overhaul, it requires Steam to play). @chasseur: How old is your computer? Because you might want to re-read my first post, especially this part: I have a recent Windows XP on my old laptop for instance, so I had to go to properies and run the game with Windows '98. Its not a new game (good 9 years, at the top of my head).

Chasseur85 plays a lot of these games. I think he has a whole collection.

Lord_Denton: Yes, Harmon was correct about that, I refused to get Vista since I play Cossacks Back To War which is around the same time of release as AOS II. The Computer I stated was made in around '06, presumably 4 years after the release. It didn't work there, so I tried a computer from 2000. It still didn't work, yet on an identical labtop from a friend it worked perfectly.

Thank you. Tried the patch and it still didn't run. Makes sense now.

It's not really a patch...and if it still doesn't run then how does it make sense?

Its not a patch. It is converting what year of windows that you run it on. There is a patch available, but if you can't get the game working, I see little reason to patch the game. To avoid any future, err, confusion, try posting in full sentences what happened and in what way we can help, if at all.
