Guys you gotta start somewhere. How about use cardstock and DIY instead of jumping into manufacturing?
When I started thinking about production, my wife suggested I look at Cri-cut machine, which can hook up to your PC and it can cut shapes from a vector graphic file. The catch is that you can only cut cardstock (not sure how thick). But I assume it's thick enough to build a non-crappy copy of Pirates ships. Search for Cricut or Cri-cut on Youtube.
So you need: a PC inkjet printer that accept cardstock Cri-cut $190 from Walmart S.C.A.L. software $75 vector graphic software ($0-200) cardstick ~$10
Gets you going from a total investment < $300, you have to put in some effort initially but the rest you can just crank out cardstock ships at under $0.50 per ship. Sell them to raise money to bring it to styrene (or even better!) material.

This kinda goes along with how I have always planned to release my player set. I will provide artwork, and stats, but making the actual models is up to the individual player.
However, now I have an actual machine name to look into for my own stuff. WOOT!

Fascinating, I definitely suggest that we look into this.
And by look into this, I mean that we should actually do this. Perhaps just make a really small set with just a couple crew and ships, and sell those, and then we can go to an actual set.
+1 for ding73ding, who is pretty much the saviour of this.

+1 for ding73ding, who is pretty much the saviour of this. Agreed, and done that too now. On a karma related note, I am a bit shocked, this it the first forum I have joined with karma that I am not running into the negatives within a week.

Most karma related forums are filled with, well, you know. I won't actually use the actual term for them. But we all know what I mean here.
Though this is purely from an observational standpoint, as this is the first that I've actually joined a forum with karma.
So, should we get investors into this? Not actual investors. But people who wouldn't mind pitching in $.
And people who pitch in $$ get their name in the set? I think that it'd be funny to give them all gold-related abilities as well.
And then there's also the problem of who will actually have this stuff at their house.

I'm afraid I can't pitch in guys. I'm too broke, and I have such limited experience playing this game I think I'm regulated to site admin. The people who will have the stuff at their house (and its all or nothing, we can't have the inkjet here, the cardstock here, etc.) must be both trustworthy and located in a convienent location for shipping (If the person is in California for instance the people in Europe will get steamed that shipping is so high). Bear in mind to any people willing to toss in some $$ that there will be no safety net to catch you if you fall. As I have done to everybody who helps with Production, +1 to karma for ding73ding!

Announced.

huh? Announced what?
whatever...if I had the money I'd probably buy it myself...but I don't have that kind of cash...maybe a few bucks later on if we can get enough people to pitch in.
here's the problem, the fact that anyone that would put in money probably would want something in return for their investment...prototypes, access to the program(s) and/or cutter, discount on final product, something I haven't thought of (its late, I'm lazy, and I've had enough Pirating for the day...campaigning is tiring...even more so when you're Privateering the event).

Announced on all forums, so everyone sees it... Only stuff of great importance (The Site update, must-read threads, and all solid production ideas) are given this treatment. Every little bit would help. Of course. The people who have the printer would be the ones testing the prototypes, to save on S&H. The ones pitching in the bucks could also maybe receive important jobs (I hate to do it this way on favoritism, but the people who help with production are the ones who make this happen after all). Anything else I'm missing?

I have set aside some money so that if this does happen, I'm ready. I'm also selling off some Warhammer so that's at least $200 right there.

Hate to sound like a broken record (its my jobs) but be warned this could result to nothing. But having some spare change always helps anyways. ;D From a email: Well, I'm not seeing much of another option at this point.

In yet another of my past lives I was a framer. I was paid big monies to cut paper based boards of all types with extreme care and precision for years after college, I can also chime in and say blades "are" one of the biggest expenses and you can never tolerate even the slightest amount dullness when attempting precision cuts. If you do you start losing money on throw aways mistakes.
I think I'm about done with the pipe-dreams guys. Not to sound down on the fan set and yay for everybody still trying to think outside the box, but I suggest stop wasting time on this for now and make a set. Make it available as a pdf for fans to do with as they please. Playtest the cards and stamp them for regulation play. If we get this together then we can explore new ways to print them. Alot of nothing is going on because of the organization and creative road blocks these threads make.

Thinking more about it, I agree with Omegatraf. I think that we should do what Riz is doing. Just make the set, and put it online.
Let's actually do some fun stuff, since this is what this set is about! : )

true...putting something, anything, out soon would be nice to at least keep interest...might I suggest doing crew first...they can have a big impact and would be easiest to actually make and print...the first ships would probably be best if they are "remakes" of existing ships...that way no new ships will have to be cut out...just print new deckplates and use the existing ship...plus since there'd be no cutting involved, the ability area can be expanded for longer abilities if needed (I've done this for specific scenario related ships I've printed).
...I like Riz's idea, but I'm not a big fan of the art...nothing against you, but the cards I did look at weren't really similar enough in art style to fit in with existing deckplates (some of your blank tamplates are nice, I just don't know why you aren't using them)...maybe something messed up because I didn't have the right fonts or something, but I really want to see the style kept as similar to what already exists...the only reason any of the cards I've printed for myself haven't fit in quite right is because I used junky cardstock instead of styrene or cardboard...there may be legal issues surrounding the template or something, but since we aren't going to be making any cash off an online release, we could probably use the existing card style...
...on a similar note: what are the real fonts Wk used for certain aspects of the cards...name, ability, flavor text? I've been using the closest thing I have right now...mainly Times for ability/flavor text...can't recall the other font right now...but its kind of "Piratey" or Medieval a bit cursive...serious but with elements of humor...for a font that's a really weird description...anyway, gotta find the real fonts so they look better.
