Just because there wasn't one and I had an idea. Cursed Triangle - terrain type(like Reef) When placing this terrain, place each of the three peices seperately on the board so that they form a triangle shape. Each of the sides of the triangle cannot be more than 7 L. what would it look like? As a terrain peice it'd be printed on the back of an Island card. For the island I'd make it a small archipelago instead of an actual solid landmass. Thus it'd have three sections of actual land to it. The markers for the cursed triangle would be little more than x's. It'd probably be best to make multiple colors in case people put more than one on the board. As for the ability.... I'd make it kinda like one of the mysterious islands, except with less dire consequences. One of the islands could blow your ship up if you were REALLY unlucky... here's a prototype idea: Each turn when a ship inside the triangle is given an action roll a dice and apply an effect cooresponding to the die roll: 1: lose a mast 2: a crew gets marooned on the nearest island 3: if there is a crew marooned with 2 and an empty space on your ship, place a marooned crew on your ship(you now have control of the crew) 4: maroon a non-crew cargo 5: recover a marooned non-crew cargo 6: nothing

interesting...maybe one affect can say something like...the opponent to your left can move this ship S in any direction...to represent the fact you've lost your heading briefly...the marooning thing, maybe just it back to only one and make it any cargo, but maybe make it the opponent's choice, or lowest point cost...those lackies are so bad at staying on board ships in movies...represent that by cheap crew. that opens 2 slots then...one can be enemy moves the ship S...and one more...hmm...maybe the ship's base move is reduced to S...or you can't use crew abilities (like Fear).
could be fun...I might have to try it out during a campaign session over here...Triangle in the middle of the gaming area...it will be evil.

OOH! I just remembered what some of my ideas were. Becalmed: can't move this turn. treacherous current: opponent moves ship S fearstruck The ones for marooning crew and cargo apply to only one crew or cargo at a time. One thing I forgot to explain is that Islands(but not home islands) and other terrain can occur inside the Triangle. Maybe do like the Mystery islands and have multiple versions with differing abilities?

What about events and/or "cursed" treasures that add terrain features after the game has already started?

like Lost or Calypso? sounds fun...I made a sea monster once that could add one sargasso sea to the game within S of it. I also made a UT that added a Reef L-away from the island and then allowed the opponent to move the ship that found the UT...I think you could then move the UT to another wild island...maybe...it was evil.

Yes, that second one is much like what I was looking for.
hmm prototype: Map of the Devil's Triangle unique treasure When this treasure is revealed, choose a Cursed Triangle from outside the game. Place one corner within S of this island and follow the normal placement rules for the other two corners.
How's that?

interesting...if you get a chance to playtest it, I'd like to hear about the results...I might see if anyone want to test it this weekend around here instead of the storm we've been using.

Cool. I'll have to try it out myself. I made it big enough to surround half the map if positioned just right. But it's a function of how close people put the islands. If everyone does the max distance it'll get at most 3. Putting them at the minimum distance it might be able to cover the entire map in a 2 player game.

well, we're playing on two 3x6' tables with 8 players and an NPC fleet that I'll be commanding in addition to my regular fleet. I was planning on putting it near the Jade Rebellion (NPC) colony and calling it the Dragon's Triangle for the day...I replaced slot 4 and 5 with: 4 - Becalmed for that ship and 5 - Opponent moves the ship S (before you get to move it).
I was also considering only placing in play when the Jade flagship was sunk...placing the triangle around the sunk ship...making it hazardous to take out the Jade flagship...but that might get complicated...and that's the last thing we need...its already complicated enough, plus we have a relative noob playing this weekend, so making it as simple as possible might help (of course he is a relative of one of our regulars, so I'm guessing he's played more games than I suspect).
Anyway, I'll post here about any results we get.

Ah, that sounds good. I'm actually starting to wonder if L would be better than S. Most ships move farther than that.

true...maybe I'll test it as L instead...see if its too powerful that way; it is a 1 in 6 of even rolling that number...

Maybe one for spawning a fog bank on top of your ship?
OOOH! A cursed triangle that mimics the Sargasso sea! (well the fictional version of it anyways) 1: add a seaweed under your ship and act as if you just hit it. 2: see 1 3, 4, 5: nothing 6: remove a seaweed within S

haha! that's kind of fun sounding...of course big ships wouldn't really be affected much...
oh, and our test results from today were kind of lacking...I made a balsa wood triangle and placed it starting at the Jade colony island and overlapping a few reefs, a whirlpool and a few other islands...it didn't do much besides take a few masts, strand a crew, get a crew picked up, and even killed a shark...yeah...weird huh? Carcharadon was roaming around in the triangle and eventually hit the "lose a mast" one too many times and died...poor sharkie. Champ had his tail bitten off by the Triangle, Deliverance lost a mast, HMS Grand Temple was thrown into the triangle a few times, usually with little affect...lost one mast, the other times nothing...Admiral Yi's captain was stranded on an island only to be picked up again by Admiral Yi near the end of the game, the captain then died when Admiral Yi went through a whirlpool at the edge of the Triangle...it was really odd...I even dropped a Cursed Zone event inside the triangle and it did very little...at least we have some results...can be deadly but avoidable in a large enough playing area with enough whirlpools and fast ships...

cool. That's what most of the terrain is. Annoyances. Though certain ones have strategic uses. This doesn't really have much strategy to it. choosing a location to place it would be the most strategy. Of course the same is true of mystery islands.... and those are kinda cool.

I guess...by a strange chance, we had an MI at the edge of the triangle...so depending on where you docked you could be in or out of the triangle...
...I might email around to our players that played that day and get their thoughts on it.
