Hello, I have returned from a vacation/re-enactment at grand portage minesota. (i am an 18th century re-enactor, hence my love of history ) and while there as a re-enactor attended several workshops on 18th century ships, rigging, and navigation, in adition to tinsmithing. but anyhow i got a bevy of great information on different ships, and great packets and printouts i will scan and create apoll for types). sorry for not posting in awhile i will get a new laptop soon. and will become more active again. Lord D did you go to the Rendezvous? i believe you are from minnesota. also i will try calling companys tomorrow. thanks

Welcome back! Minnesota ehh? Sounds very cool. Wish I could go to these things (I didn't know about it). Thanks alot for calling the companies. I posted a great site in the forum "resources" for ship types, I'm sure we can find some great new ship types to make (if styrene is the way the tides take us). Best of luck catching up on all the forum threads/posts.

I've been trying to read all the posts in every single forum in every single board but it takes a long time.

I've been trying to read all the posts in every single forum in every single board but it takes a long time. harmon783, what is the point or purpose of this post?
If you have no answer to the above, you should take this as a light warning. It is starting to get on the borderline of spam.
If it is a mere thread bump, its okay.

Sorry....I didn't mean to sound like spam or anything. I was just replying to your comment about catching up on posts. It takes a long time.

Okay, this is starting to confuse me. I'll just say, PM the apology next time. Well, I think we've killed discussion on this thread.

Hmm... Ship mast numbers already in use: 1: teeny triangle masted normal ships, turtle ships 2: schooners, sharks, normal ships, junks 3: schooners, normal ships, junks 4: Titans, sea serpents, schooners, seadragons?, normal ships 5: giant squid, normal ships 6: junks, normal ships 7: 8: Kraken 9: 10: Junks I see holes that need filled. There actually was a seven master built by the US in 1902: en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Thomas_W._Lawson_(ship)What's really amusing? It was a SCHOONER! Hehehe..... *doesn't see a reason why it's status as a merchant vessel is relevant* Although, it was historically recorded as being one of the most awkward to steer and ungainly vessels ever built.

you've heard of that ship too? i heard that the amount of mast was so many that the mast were named fore, main, mizzen 1-4, and aft, oh and sea dragons have four masts by the way

Nah, not quite. they apparently couldn't figure out what to name them, and each crew made up their own names....

That's a really weird looking ship! I wonder why they even built it. Btw, marhawkman, you need to put the url thing around the whole address because the link is messed up. It took me to a business man and I had to click another link to the ship.

um...the only 6-masters are junks...and you forgot 1-4 mast galleys, 2-mast blockade runners, windcatchers, turbines, catamaran and double-catamaran, flotilla (although technically not a ship), switchblades, scorpions, bombadiers...
...oh and that 7-masted schooner would be pretty hilarious to have in the game...the ungainly steering could be represented by NOT giving it the Schooner keyword...because stern-turning a behemoth like that would be really awkward looking and might actually have some affect on distance and movement of the ship...

Um actually considering how long the hull of a 4 masted schooner is.... It might double it's movement(assuming you're turning it 180). How many masts do all of those have? (makes half-baked updated list) 0: flotilla 1: triangle masted normal ships, turtle ships, galleys 2: schooners, sharks, normal ships, junks, galley, blockade runner, catamaran 3: schooners, normal ships, junks, windcatcher, double catamaran 4: Titans, sea serpents, schooners, seadragons?, normal ships 5: giant squid, normal ships 6: junks 7: 8: Kraken 9: 10: Junks anyways, the basic idea here is to fill in the gaps with new stuff. Since we wanna go historically as much as possible, I think it'd be a great idea to toss in a few ideas inspired by some of the biggest ships every to sail the high seas. Such as the Lawson (above) and the Great Eastern. en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SS_Great_EasternAll I can think of to say here is OUCH! Launched in 1858 it was just short of 700 feet long. It took around 4 years to build and 1.5 to dismantle for scrap. Scary huh? that' biggesr than most modern warships.... (yes it's technically a cruiseliner, not important) Hmm... for in game rendering I'd make it a six masted turbine. Not sure what else. @harmon: Guess who the ship was named after.

She was at first named the SS Leviathan, but her high building and launching costs ruined the Eastern Steam Navigation Company and so she lay unfinished for a year before being sold to the Great Eastern Ship Company and finally renamed SS Great Eastern after the company.
