Has the subject of marketing come up? Is this something that will be available by online purchasing only? Will there be a push to distribute to local game/comic stores? And are there plans to advertise, possibly in magazines such as Game Trader, etc?

Has the subject of marketing come up? Nope. We need to find out about the companies first, and it takes a looooooooong time to get a response. Most likely yes. It is more convenient that way. I think that will cost to much shipping and handling. And, we may get into legal trouble if we send it to stores. Unless someone is willing to pay for it (anybody? ), no. Again, that might get into legal trouble. If someone could help us (me and the Scarlet Pimpernal) search for styrene companies to push this along, we'd be grateful.

Dare I suggest some of the hardcore team that will eventually be assembled to produce this fan set should be given free samples? To disperse at a local comic show or similar event.
I know free samples sold me on Pirates ;D Or I'd have never know what it is.
I started a thread at wkp about setting up two player decks and giving them away to strangers. I've done it 3 times now. Don't know if it worked but its a start.

Unless someone agrees to pay for it (don't look at me, I'm just the site admin!) ,free samples cannot be done, I'm afraid. If stickers or stickers-styrene are the only way to produce this, then they will likely be put online for free.

what might be a good idea...we should get some posters that are somewhat generic "Pirates of the Cursed Seas Pocketmodel Game" and send them to everyone on here and see if we can get them posted in our venues...have a little tagline at the bottom with the webpage and such info about buying and where to chat and all that...our venue has no real promo material at the moment except a trophy we had made especially for Pirates events that is kept in the store (every so often we hold an event that will be recorded on the trophy, its fun!).
also, is it going to be sold through this site or another or what? we may need a topic about this after we know if we're going to actually get something into production.

I would totally be up for that! I have a good relationship with the guys at my store. I'm sure they'd be up for posters and the like!

Probably my fault. I'm not all that swift when it comes to computers. Thanx for the assist, LD!

Not to derail any of the good ideas in this thread, but I don't think "marketing" should even be a consideration with this set. It's just not going to come even close to being cost effective.
If this goes the styrene route, free promo pieces are simply not an option unless it hits enough volume where "losing" a small percentage of the pieces as give-aways won't have a significant effect on the overall cost. We're talking hundreds, thousands, or even tens of thousands of sets for that to work - certainly not the two dozen or so that would go out assuming everyone involved so far buys in for at least one set. Every "free" promo created would add to the cost of each of those sets, and even if it works out to just a few cents per promo it adds up quickly, especially when the cost is being absorbed by so few sets.
Promotional Posters are a far cheaper option, but even that has a lot of cost involved. Someone has to create the artwork, which at the very least will take up a lot of time. If you want to show pictures of the actual product, it'll have to wait until production has begun. If you try to shortcut the process by doctoring up existing images, whether they are of WK ships or just generic artwork, there will likely be copyright issues that would most likely require paying the original owner/author something. Once the poster art is finished, it still has to be printed and distributed (not necessarily in that order) which adds even more cost that has to go somewhere.
On top of all that, the whole purpose of promotional items, both freebies and posters, is to draw in new players. Realistically speaking, that's just not going to happen with this set. Considering that even a lot of established players aren't willing to spend more than $50-$60 on the set (refer to the pricing poll), there is no way a newbie is going to want to spend that much when they have no idea if they're even going to like the game. Even if they have played it and enjoyed it, most still aren't going to want to spend that much on a product of unknown (physical) quality when booster packs of the "proven" product are still widely available.
The only good way to market this set is through word-of-mouth to established players. That means finding those lurkers on other forums that don't get involved much and/or those players that used to be on the forums but have drifted off for one reason or another. It also means talking directly to other players you know personally through your gaming groups and/or your venues. Who knows, you may still get lucky and snag a few new players that way (but don't count on it).

Truth has spoken (yet again), in the person of Woelf. Word of mouth shall be the best way to get the word out. Heck, I put four links (one on MT, someone posted one on PPW, and two on Pojo) and we have 24 members on the forum, and proabably a handful interested. No need to do anything fancy. A piece of paper poster, using some basic elements should suffice any needs. Also, some form of promo video to post on youtube would be welcome...

I think marketing it on the internet somehow would be a good idea; it won't cost anything. Also...I didn't even realize that there was something in a lighter color Lord D..you might want to change it...I had to highlight it to read it. Unless someone agrees to pay for it (don't look at me, I'm just the site admin!) ,free samples cannot be done, I'm afraid. If stickers or stickers-styrene are the only way to produce this, then they will likely be put online for free.

Well, for the most part, the internet is free advertising. Also, I meant to put it in that color. You can tell there is something there, there is a large gap in the middle of a sentence.

;D Ya, I just thought that you accidentally held space for a long time and didn't notice it or that you were trying to make it go to the next line without pressing enter or something. Anyway, that is a hard color to read, I had to bend my laptop screen really far away to read it without highlighting it. I can't even see it when it's vertical. But ya, you could post a video on YouTube or if anyone has a website maybe they could advertise it for us.
