I put Titan on "non-crab" pieces because the flavor for them had people riding them, but they were cleary some kind of sea creature and titan is the only creature type that can carry crew. Plus, I've been wondering what others think of "non-traditional" ships with keywords they really shouldn't have...like Titans that are squids (or 3-masters).
Duffle may seem expensive, but oddly the ability only comes out to 4-5pts...maybe it could be cheaper since it is dependent on rolling and ramming...the ability was originally intended as a way for Ironclads to do extra damage when ramming, but the flavor fit oddly well on this creature/foot/ship/thing...um...stupid internet...can't remember where the idea came from for the critter itself...search it on wiki if you really need to know.
Skoffin was a bizarre attempt at using Homing Beacon's sight line in an interesting fashion...of course you probably wouldn't measure every turn...just to those ships you think you need to Fear up.
Magnus was based on the Flotilla towing rules...except used offensively...easy to make, just cut and paste the wording of the towing into the monster's ability area add the bit about enemy ships and distance and bam! You've got a cool ability...no helmsman, no "+L with a captain," no"+L with all your masts." It is evil, but really, if you're that close you should really shoot at it and not run...unless you're in a junky rowboat...in which case you're dead anyway since this guy'll eat your rowboat.
Muldjewangk without the ability is 6 points...Calypso's whirlpool generator ability is 5...so I just costed it that way...I suppose I could knock it down a point or two since it is only placing one terrain unlike Calypso's two.
Melusina was a very fun one to make, the ability was first typed up by myself back during my "Great Sea" Zelda set...I had a giant bird that I was making that snatched "blond-haired girls" from around the seas in an attempt to find Princess Zelda...I figured the ability was so cool that I'd make another one, but more traditional myth...when I found Melusina's story I figured I use the ability again. Plus, as you already said, using the dragon can finally get you some gold...how many people use game pieces that can't help them in the main focus of the game (getting gold!). So, she fits in nicely toward achieving that objective of winning by gold.
hmm...I had some really odd stuff in "Great Sea"
Cursed ~ 9pts ~ Gyorg [shark]
2 masts, 0 cargo, move S+L, 4S, 4S
Sea Monster. If this sea monster successfully rams a ship, eliminate one cargo from the rammed ship.
Common enemy found throughout the Great Sea; similar to sharks, but much more aggressive toward people.
Cursed ~ 9pts ~ Kargorok [head/wings/feet all attached to base, cannon on head]
1 mast, 1 cargo, move D, 3S
Sea Dragon. If this sea dragon successfully uses a "swoop" attack, instead of dealing damage, you may eliminate one cargo from the target ship.
Usually seen around Dragon Roost Island. Occassionally seen carrying other smaller enemies into battle. Usually considered a pest, but can be deadly if you let your guard down.
in the game these two were basically just there to slow you down and knock you out of your boat, they did little damage besides that. Of course in packs they got really annoying...too bad they couldn't end up being "generic ships" so you could have multiples in play at a time...
